Edward became not merely a distinguished historian and sceptical philosopher, but a peer in his own right as Baron Herbert of Chirbury. George began a vigorous pursuit of a Cambridge career that might have taken him high in what would now be seen as university administration: he became Cambridge’s Public Orator. As Drury comments (with rueful experience of modern academe), this was equivalent to a latter-day director of development, with potential for a fat salary while schmoozing the great and possibly good through the 17th-century equivalent of public relations – rhetoric or speech making. In 1623, Herbert was the university’s hero of the hour when his graceful Latin restored King James’s good temper, after rash dons had performed an anti-Catholic play in front of their royal visitor.
